78 Inches to Go

October 14, 2004

All that's left is a final pour. The gap between Piers 15 and 16 (the two support columns closest to Oakland) is down to six and a half feet as a major milestone draws near - joining the first two piers. Using SLEDs and brute strength, trades workers and operators lift a roadway section weighing hundreds of tons off of a barge and into position in this sequence of photos. All that is left to connect the first two piers of the new bridge is a relatively small concrete "closure pour." The final gap will be filled in with concrete within the next few weeks.

Going up! Two roadway sections, one in the foreground another in the rear, rise simultaneously near Oakland as work continued October 4, 2004.
